We booked the boathouse for our silver wedding anniversary not knowing if the reality of it would live up to our expectations from finding it online. The boathouse not only lived up to them, it surpassed them and exceeded all that we could ever hope for. What a wonderful place, full of surprises! We loved looking over the lake especially first thing in the morning when we awoke. From the wonderful heron who visited each day, the little moorhens, the swans, the outer deck right down to all of the little finishing touches June and Brian had provided to make our stay as comfortable as possible. This is a beautiful peaceful escape and has been one of the most relaxing and enjoyable weekends we've ever had! Thank you we will definitely be back, John

6th - 13th Nov Had a lovely relaxing week. The herron visited every day but the otter did not make an appearance. The kingfisher is stunning if you manage to catch a glimpse of it. The Apple Inn in Lucker and the Tankerville Arms both serve fabulous food at reasonable prices. The boathouse is a lovely place for a relaxing break. Thank you Liz and Alison

23rd - 26th October This is our second trip here and it is still beautiful and magical. It was a birthday surprise and I couldn't have wished for a better present. I now count this as my second home. It gives us a chance to recharge the batteries and to plan our future dreams. We saw the heron everyday, who looks amazing when in flight. Thank you for the lovely high tea and please dont change a thing. From very relaxed and happy Julie and Gary xx

In our opinion, the Boat House is one of the best places that we have stayed, including Rural Retreats, National Trust, et al. Northumberland is a beautiful county, and very underestimated, could even contemplate moving to the area. Back to The Boat House, well worth that little extra cost, and we thought the cost to be irrelevant on first seeing the boat house. The owners were more than happy to chat with us and allowed us to walk around all of their grounds, very palatial Thank you and with very best regards Jeff & Pam Bamforth”

2nd - 5th May 2014 After a frantic drive up the A1 this oasis of calm was very welcome and the afternoon tea and celebratory fizz put huge smiles on our faces. Soon the strain of daily life ebbed away. We enjoyed boating at dawn and dusk and saw an otter, the moorhen, the cormorant, heron but best of all came across a sleepy owl in the pine tree just across the 'trip trap' bridge behind the boathouse. Tina and Chris

13th - 16th December 2013 We loved every minute here, I cannot imagine we will ever stay anywhere which is as perfect as this. Lovely, cosy accommodation. Beautiful outlook. We seen the heron and kingfisher, seen a deer walking in the woodland. Brian and June made our stay even more enjoyable providing an amazing afternoon tea and bottle of bubbles was so special. We ran out of candles, Brian came over in the awful wind and rain to give us enough to see us through the weekend. They are both lovely people, and made us feel so welcome. We will be back thats for sure! Jan and Peter

22nd - 25th November 2013 We came here 2 years ago and got engaged. We thought that it was the most beautiful perfect place in the UK. We're planning our next visit already but we'd have to stay for a whole week - a weekend just isnt long enough. Thank you Allie and Si xx

29th May - 2nd June 2013 Mr and Mrs Pattinson This is a truly beautiful, magical place. Having enjoyed our big day in the main hall we couldn't have dreamed of a better end to our perfect wedding than having our own mini-moon here with our beautiful 8 month old daughter, Lily. Waking up to 'that' view everyday is so refreshing. We have befriended a swan watched the heron do his daily fishing trip, saw red squirrel in the woods, watched bats, baby rabbits and not forgetting the local sheep. Good times for animal lovers. Even the carp in the lake popped up a few times. We will be coming back without a doubt just a short trip up the A1 to paradise and great memories of BBQ's with friends. Love it! Amanda and Ian and baby Lily.

Last year we travelled to Canada for some place just like this. Now we know its just up the A1 we can cut down on air miles! We arrived heavy hearted city dwellers and left with joy in our hearts. This is a wonderful place of tranquillity so thank you June and Brian for having the vision to create it.

Clare & Darren Brown Pontefract

All I can say is what a fabulous and absolutely stunning place to spend a few days, which by the way does not seem long enough time to be here! We have never felt so relaxed, you arrive feeling stressed of all the stresses of family life and work but you leave refreshed even though you don’t want to leave (But you have to soo the next couple can come and enjoy the peace and beauty) We have also enjoyed watching the antics of the heron and the cormorant that sits on its perch every morning near the boat jetty. We have also seen red squirrels in the tree to the left of the balcony, we’ve heard the owl in the morning but did not get the pleasure of seeing it. There are plenty of other birds to see on the pond and in the woods, we didn’t get the pleasure of seeing any deer but on the last afternoon we watched a fox which came from the woods to the right and went and lay amongst the trees at the opposite side of the lake where the heron and ducks normally are. I hope whom ever comes here next have as good a time as we have, we will hopefully be back, we just loved it.

Arrived in 4-5 inches of snow – a real winter wonderland! Lots of footprints in the snow from deer, heron, woodhen and small birds. Waking up to the sun rising off the lake is a memorable experience , as is the owls hooting at dusk. An idyllic place, we intend on coming back in the summer months. Thanks June and Brian!

We spent the most magical, amazing, peaceful Christmas at the Boathouse. Extremely relaxing place to stay and we felt one with nature. We absolutely love the Boathouse – What a fantastic luxury get away! We didn’t want to leave!! Best beach was Ross Bank Sands. We didn’t make it across to Holy Island as we were too relaxed in the morning to make the causeway and back before it shut for the day. We saw a red squirrel on the tree next to the balcony and wild deer the lake. We will defiantly make it back in warmer weather!

This is truly the most amazing beautiful and tranquil place and we have thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Highly recommend the tree house in Alnwick which is a 20 minute drive, A tree house restaurant with beautiful fairy lights everywhere and a huge fire in the middle, The food is gorgeous! We saw the heron lots and a few moor hens but sadly no otter. We affectionately called this place “Paradise” and it truly is. Writing this as the sun rises over the lake we don’t want to go home. Already planning when we can come back! We were absolutely blown away when we first got here and that has never left us, absolutely stunning! Thank You!

We booked this holiday six months ago and have gazed lovingly at the photos on the website – but these came nowhere near preparing us for the fantastic reality! We have basked in luxury and enjoyed the show that mother nature performed outside our doors: Best the Herron and his mate, two red squirrels, the woodhens, the woodpeckers and the mesmerising effects of the sun and wind on the lake. The perfect break!
The Wynding Hen at Bambrough, recently refurbished, serves excellent food – we recommend this!

Lorraine & john 13th August 2012 Our first visit to this part of the UK – What a first impression! Everything and soo much more than we expected. The beautiful beaches with soft soft sand, wonderful castles with varied histories and such stories to tell. Everyone was soo friendly and cheerful. Then there is the boathouse to stay in – Perfect. Such a tranquil setting with wildlife to watch and every single need catered for. Thank you soo much to Brian and June. We are not ready to get back to reality but can only do so knowing we can plan another trip and can’t wait to see The Folly completed! Thanks again you are the most wonderful hosts! We find it hard to find a place quieter than our Cotswold village but we certainly have this time!

Mr + Mrs McConnell 9/4 – 15/4 2012 Durham

WOW! Words cannot describe the beauty and tranquility here! We came here our ‘mini’ moon just after our wedding to get away before going back to work and the place is just a dream! Spent a couple of days just lazing by the lake (with blankets as I wouldn’t say it was warm) watching the world go by and relaxing on the boat with a bottle of champagne We’ve been to several restaurants in the area, Warren House is very expensive and is a full 6 course meal so is ideal for special times. Food is goof. Blacketts in Bamburgh is nice to go to, close by but pricey for what you get. Highly recommend a trip to the Tree House at Alnwick, best meal of the week. Loved everyday here, sad to go. Swans, geese, ducks, fish jumping, rabbits, deer but no otters or kingfisher which we really wanted to see. Thank you so much, hopefully see you again soon. Regards Phil + Laura

There isn’t very much we can say that hasn’t been said already. The boat house is outstanding and the location is second to none. No where will ever be able to compete with here. Who needs airports and goes when you can have a honeymoon right here. We had a day trip to Edinburgh which was well worth it and a day in Pinnaches, both were great and can highly recommend the fish and chips at pinnaches. Hope to see you again, Kahe + Hakim xx

Alan + Judith Derby 16th- 23rd March 2012

We have had a fantastic week. Lovely sunny weather so we were able to sit outside for early morning coffee watching the wildlife. Most days 2 swans came to visit we also saw 3 deer, phesants ducks and the red squirrel on a couple of occasions. We visited Berwick, Lindisfarne, Alnwick, Seahouses, Alnmouth and Bamburgh Castle. Also the national trust property at Cragside though the highlight was a visit on Wednesday night to Kielder observatory for an evening stargazing we were lucky to have a clear sky they saved the best until last a view of Saturn you could clearly see the rings and its moons. The boathouse has been one of the best places we have stayed in everything to ensure a really relaxing holiday thanks to June and Brian we will be sad to leave.

Midlesborough Jan 23-27th 2012

Where do I start! This place is just out of this world, surreal at times! Definitely the most amazing, relaxing, romantic place my husband and I have ever stayed. We arrived on my husbands 40th birthday to be greeted on our 1st evening with an otter swimming towards us through the middle of the lake! The next morning we awoke to a beautiful sunrise, to look up in the tree to the left of us and see 2 red squirrels chasing each other ip the tree. Then much to my husbands delight the 3rd day we spotted the kingfisher! This has a favourite place perched in the little tree in the water near the boat, he even caught it through the binoculars catching fish twice!! Bamburgh, Detchant woods had some amzing walks and been out on the boat – wonderful experience. If you visit Bamburgh Catle. Have a meal in the Castle Hotel – beautiful food. Well I could go on praising this place but sadly were leaving now. Definitely hope to return in the future. Thank you for letting us experience this amazing place! Andy + Karen

6th Jan – 13th Jan

What a surprise! First date that I will never forget! The most amzing place I have ever been to. The Boathouse is magical, such a lovely hideaway – feels like time stops here. Bamburgh Cadtle is a must see – there is a crazy old guy but he has such great tales to tell about the castle, the ghosts and the area, it was well worth going just to chat to him. Stranded on Holy Island – an experience that is super fun – be sure to walk to the castle and visit the Lime Caves. Oh and Lindisfarne Mead is gorgeous – be sure to stock up! If you take the boat out – make sure its not too winy unless you are a strong rower – quite hard to get back. Will never forget the boathouse – the sunrise, the lake, the setting is second to none.

James + Emma + Baby Ava 10/10/11 – 14/10/11 WOW! What an amazing, beautiful and magical place Brian and June have created. The boathouse is the most perfect place from which to enjoy this haven from reality. Every detail pof the building has been finished to the highest standard. Wildlife count consited of 1 heron, 2 moorhens, 4 ducks, 2 rabbits, 2 deer, 1 kingfisher but alas no otters or red squirrel. We have now developed a ‘binocular obsession’ so desperate were we to see the illusive otters! Still we can add one more special occasion to the history of the boathouse, we got engaged on the first night so I guess we ill never forget our time here (not that we would have) just enjoy, you will never stay anywhere like this place.

Andrew and Ann, Preston, 27-4th July 2011 From the moment we arrived with the very warm welcome from Brian and June this place worked its special magic as a place as quiet, silence and peace, away from it all, and yet giving easy access to wherever we wanted to go. Silence and peace is a very rare commodity inn today's world. For a week we had out own little estate to share with deer, Herron, the buzzard and all the other wildlife. The boat house is wonderful place to stay and enjoy. It's amazing how being here takes away the stresses of everyday life. Thanks to Brian and June for sharing this wonderful place. For a special place to eat in we would recommend Blacketts of Bamburgh (evening reservations needed) this is a small restaurant with great hospitality and wonderfully cooked And presented food. Also recommend the Kippers at The Shoreline Cafe in craster. In our experience one to be avoided is Pinnacle, fish and Chopin Seahouses. Thank you and see you again soon hopefully No we will see you soon!! Ann and Andrew

We've found our little piece of heaven! An amazing way to celebrate my 40th birthday. Brian and June, you've created a place James and I will never forget. Such an experience to be so near the wildlife. We'll miss the herons and the lady ducks who sleep on the tree trunk. We just wish the weather had been slightly kinder to us, however it's a good excuse to comeback again - not that we need one! Thank you, thank you, thank you, see you again. Ellie and mark 17-20th June York We absolutely love it here and don't want to leave! It's such an amazing place inside and out! No matter what the weather is doing outside you can experience it in luxury! In terms of facilities you really have thought of everything, everything we love about being in our own home is here! Candles, blankets, beautiful building, we love the oak beams. We managed to get out on the boat the one morning we had sunshine and it was so beautiful. I cannot imagine anywhere better to get engaged!! It's so special here and we cannot wait to come back. Ellie and Mark (soon to be Mr and Mrs Bonner!!) xxxx

I cannot imagine anywhere better to get engaged!! It's so special here and we cannot wait to come back. Ellie and Mark (soon to be Mr and Mrs Bonner!!) xxxx

What an amazing place! One of the most relaxing spots we have encountered. A birthday was made extra special by the glorious weather! Loved rowing the boat around the lake spotting the wildlife - we feel so much better after our escape. We loved all the little touches that Brian and June have thought about. I am sure we will return Paul and Diana 13-17th June, Kendal

Nestled in trees standing over a lake not one part of beauty does this haven forsake. A place of tranquility that soothes your soul a perfect escape when life takes its toll. So much of nature just lies at your feet peaceful and calming - an idyllic retreat. Awaken to sunlight bathing your bed, a star laden sky when you lay down your head. Otters, the kingfisher, red squirrel and deer just out of reach but yet wonderfully near. In a heartbeat your breath will be taken away. You wont want to leave once you come here to stay.

12-15th Nov, Dan and Holly - Kent The boat house is truly amazing, so amazing that we got engaged in front of the lake, the night we arrived. The views over the lake in the mornings are wonderful and we saw a deer on the last morning wandering around the lake. We loved the little boat, which we took out one day. Next time we would love to come back for a whole week, and bring a much better camera to capture even more spectacular moments. Thank you so much for such a warm welcome you have the most amazing, beautiful place. Thank you Dan and Holly

Absolutely amazing! Stunning scenery and wildlife and so peaceful. It is a perfect romantic hide away and what a place to get engaged at! We will take some beautiful memories away with us. This part of the world really feels unspoilt and a little bit of a secret hope it stays as secluded. We visited Hadrians wall, holy island, went horse riding on the moors and drove through Northumberland national park. Would absolutely recommend Warren house hotel, Grays restaurant for an added bit of luxury. Thank you Simon and Sophie, Berkshire

Carole + David - South Yorks What a perfect way to start our married life! The structure and interior of the boathouse are AMAZING and the location spectacular! We've seen heron, rabbit, red squirrel, but more importantly the otter - she put on a wonderful show on our second evening - so fabulous to see... The only downside is that we dont want to leave! It has been a very special honeymoon (forget crowded foreign cities and hot sticky beaches!) and we will recommend to everyone and hope ourselves to return one day... Thank you Mr and Mrs Oxspring x

Peaceful, relaxing, beautiful setting - what more can you ask for in a holiday. The boathouse is stunning - everything you need is here. Sitting with coffee in the morning watching the heron stalking through the shallows catching fish, to seeing deer in the forest, moorhens building a nest and rabbits! Recommend a visit to Edinburgh on the train from Berwick, Floors Castle at Kelso, watching kite surfing on the beach at Low Newton and the sausages from the farm shop on the outskirts of Belford are fantastic! Thank you to Brian and June or their warm welcome and friendliness

The boat house is a very special place. the wildlife we saw 3 otters, herons, moorhens, pheasant and on the last day a kingfisher - wonderful. When you are in the boathouse you feel as if you are still outside with all of the wonderful views. Brian and June have taken care of every luxury possible what they would like for themselves they have provided for guests. The coastal walks and beaches were fantastic a stop off at 'the ship' in Lower Newton for lunch - crab sarms, sea coal bitter and v.good coffee. Jane

17th - 24th September Peebles "Happily we bask in this warm September sun which illuminates all creatures..." Henry David Thoreau ....and illuminated they were...Kingfishers, heron, moorhens, buzzards, swallows, rabbits, toads - absolute perfection! A truly incredible and relaxing week, spent on the boat and pottering about the surrounding woodland - there is a very impressive redwood to be found.... We did, however, manage to pull ourselves away long enough to discover Barter books in Alnwick, Ross sands for kiting and Low Newton by the sea for a pint of Dolly Day Dream and a craster kipper...but always, always eager to return to the oars and the binoculars!! Brian and June, thank you so much for creating and sharing the perfect haven every last detail considered and every need anticipated. Until next time....

Wow! What a beautiful house in a perfect setting. The perfect antidote to too much work. We had some lovely days out and about walking and cycling but found ourselves wanting to get back here to sit by the lake with a G+T (thanks you June for the tonic) until well into the night. We look forward to coming back very soon. Thanks Mark and Shirley

What can we say...we could not have had a better start to married life. A serene. peaceful, relaxing location. There is so much to do in the area but our best memories have been here around the lake relaxing and adventuring. The lodge is incredibly luxurious everything has been thought of. We loved watching the swallows dancing on the water the deer peeping at us from the lakeside and we shall hope to return to find the 'Middleton otter' on a future anniversary! Many thanks for your hospitality Brian and June. Simon and Jane Fowler 23-27/08

Being used to camping we've found our stay at the Boathouse truly luxurious. And what a perfect place for wildlife watching. A highlight of our visit was watching the otter whilst we were having breakfast; also very happy to see red squirrels and various different kinds of bats as it got dark - wonderful! Thank You Glyn + Jenny

A last minute holl, that has proved to be one of the best ever. Yep, we had the otter, heron, deer, toad, frog, no squirrels. But we had a first with a sighting of a slow worm (bronzy gold and black) sneaking along the grass. Oh yes and the bats at about 9:20pm the fish in the lake seem to enjoy eating bread? This has been a very relaxing short break (really wish it had been longer.) I cannot wait to return! Our hosts Brian and Junecould not have been more helpful, thanks. See you soon, Dave + Ruth 6th - 8th Aug
