Newcastle/Gateshead

Newcastle/Gateshead

In the city centre, the architecturally fascinating Grey Street was voted Best Street in Britain by Radio 4 listeners.

Shopping malls such as Eldon Square and MetroCentre Gateshead, one of Europe’s largest shopping centre, contrast with quirky markets at Jesmond Dene.

NewcastleGateshead has more theatres per person than anywhere in the UK. Worth a look are the Theatre Royal, Journal Tyne Theatre and City Hall. The Live Theatre on the Quayside has an excellent reputation for new writing and local plays.

Eating out is a treat for all the senses, Newcastle houses the oldest dining room in the UK: Blackfriars, which dates back to the 13th century. There are hundreds more contemporary places to eat too, from laid-back bistros to sophisticated restaurants serving fine local produce with many restaurants having wonderful river or city views.

There are also some great places to stay including the glorious new Hotel du Vin on the Quayside and the sumptuous Jesmond Dene House, voted AA Centenary Awards Hotel of the Year 2008/09.

The award-winning Angel of the North sculpture, designed by Antony Gormley, stands just outside Gateshead and welcomes visitors to the city with open wings.www.newcastlegateshead.com/
